HIFU
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound
is a relatively new cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that some consider a noninvasive and comfortable replacement for face lifts.
It uses ultrasound energy to target multiple layers of skin just below the surface, encouraging the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin... with no downtime.
How does HIFU work?
As we age our skin loses its elasticity and shape. Visible structural changes begin in the functional layers of the skin. These deep layers can be targeted, treated and rejuvenated with HIFU.
Ultrasound technology involves the use of sound wave frequencies. These frequencies create focused controlled heat, which can stimulate cell renewal creating tighter, firmer, smoother skin.
HIFU facials target the foundational layers of the skin with ultrasound. These include the deep dermis and the SMAS layer (also known as the superficial muscular aponeurotic system—the layer that gets tightened in face-lifts).
The HIFU machine focuses ultrasound waves to these points deep within the skin (~4.5mm). The waves heat and coagulate the cells and proteins there to cause cell disruption and death as well as new collagen formation. This ‘deep heat’ treatment leads to skin tightening around the face and neck areas.
The onset of the new collagen generation occurs in the first three months or so following the treatment and persists for around one year. HIFU face-lifts address all areas around the face or neck which have skin laxity issues, and this highly effective procedure is renowned for providing people with new definition after just one treatment.
There is zero downtime needed post-treatment with a HIFU facial as the procedure bypasses the superficial layers of the skin entirely. All of the ultrasound technology effects happen deep within the skin. The ultrasound waves reach the target layer without disrupting the top layer of the skin at all.
As the ultrasound waves are focused across the treatment areas, you will feel tiny amounts of energy transmitted through to precise depths beneath the skin.
This feeling is perfectly normal, and it indicates that the collagen-building process is beginning. The comfort levels during the session will vary from individual to individual, but the sensation only lasts a short while.
What Does a HIFU Facial Feel Like?

The procedure lifts and tightens the face and neck for an overall younger looking appearance. HIFU is most effective around the nose and mouth area, the jawline, and cheeks.
The procedure works best on skin of mild to moderate laxity where it’s beginning to feel and look less firm with age. You will see results appear after around three months, once the collagen regeneration has started to happen. As well as being completely non-invasive, the power of the HIFU treatment is immediately visible post-treatment. Hence, why it’s become such a popular alternative to cosmetic facial surgery.
